Kellys Open 2012
Kellys Golf Centre Open Tournament 2012:
With Rory McIlroy winnning his second Major in August, it seems the excitement has returned to local golf. This was evident at our recent Open tournament which took place on the 21st and 22nd of July. This was the first ever Kellys Open Tournament and such was the interest from young and old within the centre, this will now become an annual event.
Running in conjunction with the British Open, the Kellys Open was open to competitors of all ages with £100 of prize money up for grabs. The event saw in excess of 50 people enter and despite the names on the entry forms, there were 2 names on everyone's lips - the Carville brothers, Jim and Tommy.
The brothers, who smashed the course record in June this year, fancied their chances at being crowned Kellys Open Champion, and took to the course to prove their worth. At their tee-off time, the score to beat was a level par 54. The brothers returned to the club house an hour and half later with Jim having shot a -4 for the overall lead and brother Tommy finishing on -3.
Their low scores were unmatched for the rest of the weekend resulting in a 1,2 for the Carville brothers and meaning Jim is the inaugral winner of the Kellys Open. Some of the juniors however gave the brothers a run for their money. Kevin McCumisky and Gerard McAteer were at the forefront of the junior pack with Kevin finishing on level par and Gerard shooting +1. Kevin also lifted the nearest the pin prize when his approach shot to the 103 yard 6th hole landed within 5 foot of the pin.
The tournament was a huge success and lets hope we can have someone new to challenge Jim Carville when he comes to defend his crown in 2013.
