Kellys Ryder Cup 2012
Kellys Juniors win first ever Kellys Ryder Cup:
In what proved to be a great weekend of golf for the European team at Medinah Golf Course, Chicago, there was an even more intriguing competition taking place a lot closer to home. Saturday 29th September saw the junior golfers at Kellys Golf Centre, Burren, take on a team of adults which included the centres very own PGA Pro, Dougie Bell in the first ever Kellys Ryder Cup. The great weather and beautiful backdrop of the mountains provided the perfect setting for this battle of young versus old.
It didn't take the young pretenders long to get into the swing of things as they quickly raced into a 4 – 1 lead after the pairs, winning 4 games and halving 2. The adult team which included many accomplished golfers could not cope with the great ability of these fine young golfers to find the greens. With a team including 5 year old Sean Ryan, junior league champion Gerard McAteer and some talented girls in Lee Anne Ryan and Rachel Kelly, the future of golf in South Down is certainly bright. Peter Fegan hit the score of the day with a fantastic 3 under par on his way to winning his own individual game. He wasn't alone in the singles games though, as the junior golfers from Kellys ran out easy 10 ½ – 3 ½ victors in the singles meaning they comfortably beat their more experienced opponents by 10 points with a final score of 14 ½ – 4 ½.
A great day was enjoyed by all with golf the real winner. Rumour has it the adult team have been seen on the course all weekend getting practice in for next year as they seek revenge.
